EdNC recently published an article about Edgecombe County Public Schools and their expansion of Hill Learning Center’s Hill Reading Achievement Program (HillRAP) to address foundational reading gaps amongst their students, which have been exacerbated by the pandemic. Hill and ECPS launched this initiative with $250,000 of the school system’s Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) Funds. Coupled with generous grants from The Robert E. and Dorothy Z. Barnhill Family Fund, Mebane Foundation, and Anonymous Trust, funds will enable the district to hire, train, and coach tutors and administrators, provide project coordination, and purchase technology and materials.
Hill Learning Center has been partnering with Edgecombe County Public Schools since 2014. With a strong foundation in place, this year’s expanded partnership brings more HillRAP tutors to Edgecombe County elementary schools to help close the reading gap.
Beth Anderson, Hill Learning Center Executive Director, noted: “We saw the potential impact dedicated HillRAP tutors could have by providing additional high quality, dedicated capacity… We are optimistic that by the end of this project, many, many more students will have made meaningful gains in reading.”
