What does written language instruction look like in your educational setting? What components are important to teach and how are they integrated with reading instruction?

A focus on the Science of Reading (SoR) doesn’t always incorporate written language as an important component of literacy instruction. Yet, a solid body of research supports the positive impact on literacy learning when reading and writing are taught in an integrated manner. This session describes the interconnected developmental sequences of reading and writing across the early grades, some straightforward assessment strategies, and research-based written language instruction and intervention techniques to build foundation writing skills that facilitate literacy learning.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe foundational writing skill developmental and connections to reading in the early literacy time period.
  2. Describe assessment strategies to identify levels of writing skill development.
  3. Incorporate research-based instruction and intervention techniques to facilitate writing development as well as enhancing other literacy skills.

Audience: Teachers of PreK, Transitional Kindergarten, and Grades K-5

About Presenter: Dr. Lucy Hart Paulson, Ed.D., CCC-SLP, is an author and literacy specialist with a mission of bringing research to practice. She is also a speech-language pathologist with many years of experience working with educators and with young children and their families in a wide range of educational settings. In addition, Lucy was an associate professor teaching and conducting research in the areas of language and literacy development and disorders. She provides professional development using a broad-based perspective blending areas of language and literacy together resulting in effective, appropriate, and engaging language-based literacy instruction and intervention for all children. Finally, Lucy is the co-author of the Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS) for Early Childhood Educators, 2nd Edition, Building Early Literacy and Language Skills, a resource and activity guide for young children, and also for Good Talking Words, 2nd Edition, a social communication skills program for young children.
