Based on the Orton-Gillingham approach, Multisensory Mathematics applies the research-based Concrete -Representational -Abstract (CRA) approach to teaching mathematics as advocated by the National Math Panel and the NCTM. Concepts and skills are taught systematically from simple to complex with review and reinforcement to develop mastery.

New information is taught through visual, auditory, and tactile-kinesthetic modalities to ensure students form a deep conceptual understanding of mathematical operations and language.

Designed to mirror the structure of an Orton-Gillingham lesson plan, The Key Learning Center Multisensory Math Lesson Plan utilizes Auditory, Kinesthetic, and Visual components to “prime the pump” for the instruction of new information. The introduction of new information follows the Concrete, Representational, Abstract (CRA) sequence to ensure students develop a strong conceptual understanding before learning efficient procedures for solving problems.

  • A direct impact on math lesson planning process and implementation
  • An understanding of the components of a Multisensory Math lesson plan
  • Focus on vertical linkages and using subskill review to help students access grade level concepts
  • Ideas for accommodations and strategies to reduce strains on executive function and allow students to practice grade level skills in an efficient and effective manner
  • Practice utilizing manipulatives to introduce higher level concepts and build deeper conceptual understanding
  • An opportunity to work collaboratively to brainstorm lesson planning components based on grade level standards

All participants will receive lesson planning materials, resources, and templates designed by Marilyn Zecher and Key School Multisensory Math teachers.

Audience: Grades 6-12 Math Teachers

About Presenters:
Catherine McKenzie is the Director of Multisensory Math Programs and Practicums for Key Learning Center. She is a Multisensory Math Qualified Instructor, certified by Marilyn Zecher, and a co-instructor for Marilyn Zecher’s Multisensory Math I online course.

Matthew Buchanan is the Director of Teaching and Learning in Key School. He joined Carolina Day School in 2006.
