Kate Christensen Pick has experienced the Hill Learning Center from both sides of the desk. She was a student, graduating from Hill and Jordan High School in 2008. She was described then as “hard-working, persevering and dedicated” and was named the George Watts Hill Outstanding Student in her senior year. After graduating from the University of Iowa, she returned to work as an instructional assistant for the Hill summer program in 2013. She’s been at Hill as a member of the Lower School Faculty since then and has also served as Lower School Level Coordinator. In 2014, she was the recipient of The Road Less Traveled Alumni award. In 2019, Kate married Marty Pick. They and their son live in Durham.
“The Hill Center has impacted my life in so many ways,” according to Kate. She credits Hill with teaching her strategies that she used in college and in life. “Hill inspired me to be a teacher, and I knew I wanted to help children who learned differently,” she continues. She believes Hill helped her realize that it is “okay to learn differently, and that no one should be ashamed of who they are.”
In thinking about her experiences as a student and now as a teacher at Hill, Kate reflects, “Hill helped me understand that learning differently doesn’t have to hold you back from accomplishing your dreams. Hill will always have a special place in my heart.”
